Writenex
Local-first writing software

A browser workspace for markdown: write visually, export clean Markdown or HTML, and let automatic version history protect every draft. Documents never leave the device — they live in browser storage, writing works offline and no account exists. The project is open source (MIT) and includes @imjp/writenex-astro, a zero-config visual editor for Astro content collections.

The problems to solve.

A visual Markdown editor needs to stay approachable without hiding the document format or requiring an account. Draft recovery, offline work and portable exports must fit into the same writing experience.

What we built instead.

Visual Markdown editing

WYSIWYG editing — type naturally with the toolbar or shortcuts and see every change instantly.

Portable document exports

Export clean Markdown (.md) or HTML (.html), or copy either format straight to the clipboard.

Version history and recovery

Automatic saving with full version history — compare and restore any earlier draft.

Local-first, offline writing

Everything stays in your browser: local storage, offline writing, no sign-up, free forever.

Project outcomes.

A browser-based writing workspace with visual editing, Markdown and HTML export, local document storage and version history. The accompanying Astro integration brings visual editing to content collections.
